Exam for Laura: yesterday, today, tomorrow…

The most difficult of translations are technical texts. Language skills alone are not enough, and in order to cope with such work, you have to delve into the world of technical terms and processes. Translators are well aware of this, and few people respond to such job offers.

This was the challenge Laura Kusmoldinova accepted 16 years ago, when in 2008 she came for an interview at JSC AlES to take up the position of a full-time interpreter. How important it was for the company to employ a highly qualified specialist is evidenced by the fact that the candidate was tested personally by the Chairman of JSC AlES, Byrlyk Yessirkepovich Orazbayev, whose name is now Almaty CHPP-1.

– I remember how nervous I was before the interview! Byrlyk Yessirkepovich gave me a complex technical document to translate, which I had to translate in 15 minutes, remembers Laura Kusmoldinova. The time was about fifteen to five – almost the end of the working day. I started translating quickly, the minutes flew by like seconds. The time was up and I handed in my work. He read my translation and smiled and nodded his head approvingly. Then Byrlyk Yessirkepovich briefly described what the company did and, shaking my hand, congratulated me on my new job. This is how I started my professional career as an interpreter in this large energy Company. I am proud to have worked with him – an impeccable professional in the energy sector. It was a great and important experience for me! And not only did I take up the position of interpreter, but I became part of the great Company of the company.

Laura entered the workplace with confidence, but she never tired of learning, becoming more and more immersed in technical terminology and understanding processes. Today she is a Senior Manager in the Organizational Support Department.

– Laura has a remarkable trait – her sensitivity and attention to detail. She is always sure that doing every task to the end and correctly is the key to success, says Zhomart Dauletbayev, Senior Manager of the Methodology Department of the Company. – She carefully analyses every detail and does not put off its implementation for later, always adhering to the agreed deadlines and requirements. At the same time, she has excellent communication skills and the ability to build fruitful working relationships. Her friendly and open nature makes communication with her easy and productive. She knows how to listen and offer her point of view, but is always willing to respect the opinions of others. Her positive attitude and friendly nature make her an indispensable member of our Company.

Laura herself notes the invaluable experience that the production gives her and the highlights inherent in teamwork. What a negative and dramatic situation such as a pandemic emphasized.

– At the beginning of the pandemic, we started working online. It may seem like a non-working home environment, but the format – getting the volume and delivery of translated documents by the deadline – did not change. We even gained more experience as all the translators from different departments were brought together. Now we work not only with the head office, but also with all the production departments. We now have eight translators in the Company, all of whom have over ten years’ experience. Our Company of translators is available 24/7. What projects with colossal volumes we have not handed over! But no matter how difficult it is, we always show respect and professionalism in our work and support each other. I try to find words of encouragement and inspiration for my Company every time. I tell them that “Together we are strong” and that we have the most fighting Company of “Super Translators”!

Laura Kanatbekovna’s professionalism is highly appreciated by her colleagues. Shyngys Rakhatov, Chief Manager of the Project Support Department, notes the responsibility, quality and accuracy in fulfilling the duties of Laura and her Company.

– She creates an atmosphere of fruitful success in the Company, says Mikhail Reshetnikov, Head of Operations Department. – High professionalism allows her to be on the drive, easily solve issues and overcome obstacles. It is a pleasure to work with such a colleague. I highly appreciate and respect Laura Kanatbekovna for her skill, initiative and responsibility.

Responsible for her Company, she ensures stable and timely work largely due to both her professional and personal qualities. And this is appreciated by her employees.

– Literacy, thoughtfulness, responsibility, ability to organize and delegate responsibilities – these are the professional qualities Laura Kanatbekovna possesses. It is not an easy task to organize a well-coordinated teamwork, but she manages it perfectly, says her colleague Gulshat Sultangaliyeva. – A great responsibility on interpreters, and Laura Kanatbekovna understands this very well. She creates a favorable, friendly atmosphere in the Company, while not forgetting that each specialist is first and foremost a person. Empathy, sociability, openness, friendliness, a skillful combination of professional and personal qualities ensures a positive mood in the Company.

She is not only a professional, but also a kind and responsive person.

– Laura is always ready to help and support, both in working and personal matters. I am glad to have met such a person on my life path, says Saltanat Zhanakhmetova, Chief Manager of the Environmental Protection Department.

Many colleagues also mention her multifaceted creative nature.

Laura is an excellent organizer, scriptwriter and presenter of many corporate events, adds Gulshat Sultangaliyeva, noting that the fertile environment created at AlES contributes to a large extent to this. It allows talents to manifest themselves brightly, to reveal the potential of all employees.

– Laura is not only a professional translator and she is talented presenter of festive and celebratory events held in the Company, – says Kainar Kerimkulov, Head of Technical Department. – I am very glad that I work in the same team with such a beautiful and kind person.

Laura admits that as a child she dreamed of becoming a TV presenter and journalist. She was very happy when coming to production suddenly opened up an opportunity for creative development. Now an integral and important part of her life is the role of host of many events and meetings of the AlES.

– Darya Tokbergenovna Shayzhanova once offered me to organize an event and helped me realize my long-standing childhood dream, Laura does not hide her gratitude. – For each event, whether it is a meeting of managers, celebration or awarding of our employees, I prepare thoroughly and try to hold them at a high level. This gives me so many positive emotions, impressions, a charge of vigour and positivity!

At the same time Laura is a mum of two wonderful sons. And for her, as for any mum, her children come first. But her inner harmony and cordiality, along with the ability to organize her time, allow her to achieve success in all the activities of her busy life.

– She has such a beautiful female harmony, and at the same time, working with her I know that she is a professional in her field, says Daria Shaizhanova, Head of the Corporate Development Department. – How she beautifully speaks the Kazakh language, how accurately she conveys her thoughts. It is on the verge of high art. Despite the high professional load she has enough time and energy to participate in creative projects. She manages to do everything: to lead KVN, to write scripts, and to hold evenings, for example, on the works of Yesenin, Abay, Makatayev… She does it with pleasure. We call her our professional announcer. She is a bright oriental beauty, her speeches, speech and appearance are very harmonious. She also writes poetry… How she finds such words is amazing!

In response to these questions Laura only smiles. She has no special secrets. Everyone knows the answer to them: if you treat what life gives you with love, everything will work out. And first of all it concerns the family, children.

– How to be the best mum for your child? I try to be my children’s best friend, Laura admits. – For example, my eldest son and I have been trying to achieve good results since the 5th grade, participating in all kinds of Olympiads, extra courses. And our efforts were not in vain, this summer he got a grant in KazNTU named after K.I.Satpayev. But investing efforts in family happiness and work, one should not forget about oneself. Like all modern women, I want to be in the thick of bright events, I do not want to lag behind the innovations. I study Turkish language, got the International Certificate A1. I took make-up courses and received an international diploma from Sandi Beksirga. It is not only a tribute to the female essence, but also partly a professional necessity. I realized this when I became a presenter of various events in the company. In my free time I do yoga. It allows me to be in harmony with myself. And as the famous yoga expert Jason Crandell says: “Yoga is a great opportunity to admire who you are”.

This is the portrait of beautiful, professional, creative person Laura in the eyes of her colleagues. It remains to add only a small touch: in Latin her name is translated as “symbol of glory”, and literally as “bound with victorious”. Of course, she will modestly keep silent about it …
