CHPP-2: Scheduled repair work continues
Progress of the repair campaign at the largest power plant in Almaty
A large-scale repair campaign is continuing at the CHPP-2 named after A.Zhakutov. This work is an integral part of preparing the plant for the new heating season. The uninterrupted supply of heat and electricity to the city’s residents depends on the quality and timely completion of this work.
To date, three of the 14 planned repair projects have been completed: the ongoing repair of boiler unit №8 and turbine units №1 and №4. The remaining work is in the active implementation stage.

On 10 April, scheduled routine repairs of boiler unit No.1 began. Initially, it was planned to be completed by 22 May, but during the work, damage to the reinforced concrete floor slabs was discovered, which required additional efforts and an extension of the deadline to 20 June. As of today, 95% of the repair works have been completed.
During this time, four air preheater cubes, 36 fourth-stage steam superheater packages, an emulsifier droplet catcher and four reinforced concrete slabs have already been replaced. An important stage of preparation for commissioning is currently underway: hydraulic tests are being carried out, the tightness of the pipelines is being checked, the mechanisms are being tested, and the fuel oil line is being blown out.

Boiler unit №2 has been undergoing major repairs since 25 April. The work is scheduled to last until 10 July, and about 45% has been completed so far.

At the same time, KazRemEnergo JSC is carrying out a major overhaul of TG station №3. It began on 10 May and will continue until 20 July. As part of the contract, work is being carried out at the CHPP-2 site to repair the generator stator, clean the gas coolers and replace worn generator terminals. At the contractor’s site, work is being carried out in parallel to repair the rotor.
The contractor is also performing technical maintenance of SF6 circuit breakers at the 110 kV switchyard of AlES JSC’s CHPP-2 named after A.Zhakutov.
The station’s specialists, together with the forces of PRP Eneroremont, are connecting cable products to the electric motor after the repair.

In the meantime, they’re still fixing the turbine’s flow section, replacing worn parts, and cleaning the heat exchangers, fittings, and pumps. All this stuff is to get the unit back to factory specs and make sure it’s ready to go for winter.
The current repair of boiler unit №3 began with a slight delay – instead of 11 May, it started on 17 May, after boiler №8 was put into operation. The decision was made on the instructions of the KEGOC dispatch service – to ensure the necessary reserve in the network. Repairs are currently continuing, with 10% of the planned work completed. During the work, additional scope was also identified – steam bypass pipes will need to be replaced.

Next in line is the ongoing repair of boilers №4, 5, 6, 7 and turbine units № 2, 5 and 6. All work is proceeding strictly according to schedule, in compliance with all safety requirements and technological regulations.
Energy specialists are making every effort to ensure that the station operates stably, reliably and without accidents when the cold weather arrives. Preparing for the autumn-winter period is not just a plan, it is a responsibility to every home in the Almaty region that we supply with heat and light.
