AFTER THE MODERNIZATION OF CHPP-2, THE ANNUAL AMOUNT OF PLANT EMISSIONS INTO THE ATMOSPHERE WILL BE REDUCED BY 94%
Emissions from urban CHPPs in Almaty for two years decreased by 26% – from 50 to 37 thousand tons. This was stated by Ramil Galiyev, Head of the Environmental Protection Department of Almaty Electric Power Stations JSC (AlES).
“In order to reduce the load on the atmospheric air of the city, AlES reconstructed all boiler units of the CHPP from 2007 to 2012. The degree of cleaning of emissions was almost 100%. Burner units have been upgraded, and CHPP-1 has been switched completely to gas since 2017. Total emissions from urban thermal power plants decreased by 26% – from 50 thousand tons in 2007 to 37 thousand tons in 2019, ” Ramil Galiyev said.
He added that a preliminary feasibility study for converting CHPP-2 to gas has already been developed, which presents several options for implementing the project. Capital expenditures for the modernization of CHPP-2 were estimated at between 100 and 560 billion tenge, depending on which of the proposed projects will be selected.
“The projects are expensive, with implementation dates for 2020-2029, depending on the chosen option. The problem cannot be solved by AlES or Samruk-Energy alone, so this is done at the level of the akimat and the Government. It should also be understood that, regardless of the choice of the CHPP-2 modernization option, the implementation of the project will lead to a significant increase in the tariff for electricity and heat,” Ramil Galiyev said.
