Zola’s second life
On June 16, 2023, an award ceremony took place for the winner of the competition for processing ash and slag waste at CHPP-2 named after. A. Zhakutova. The event was held with the participation of representatives of the Akimat of Almaty and the Department of Ecology of Almaty, the media, Arka Development LLP, Almaty Power Plants JSC.
Let us recall that on June 1, 2023, AlES JSC summed up the results of the competition to find scientific and technical projects for the processing and (or) disposal of ash and slag waste after hydraulic ash removal of Almaty CHPPs. Seven applications were received from potential participants, which were studied in detail by the competition commission. Which included representatives of the Akimat, the Department of Ecology in Almaty, technical specialists from scientific institutes and JSC AlES. Based on the results of consideration of proposals, Arka Development LLP was unanimously chosen as the winner of the competition.
The proposed project will make it possible to build, next to the Almaty CHPP-2, a complex for processing ash and slag waste, with an annual capacity of 300 thousand tons. As a result of processing ash and slag waste, four types of products will be obtained:
✓ underburned coal (briquetted product for boiler houses),
✓ magnetite (raw material for the metallurgical industry, filler for heavy concrete),
✓ microsphere (fillers in the production of plastic products, gypsum, ceramics, lightweight cement),
✓ aluminosilicate product (raw material for building materials).
According to the requirements of the current environmental legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the share of waste recycling should be increased to 40% by 2030, and to 50% by 2050.
The implementation of this project will allow solving the problems of deep processing of ash and slag waste generated at Almaty thermal power plants, extracting up to 99% of useful elements from them, to reduce the area of ash dumps, and then their complete reclamation.
During the event, a Memorandum on further cooperation between AlES JSC and Arka Development LLP was signed. AlES JSC awarded a certificate worth 1,000,000 tenge to the winner of the competition for the best proposal for processing ash and slag waste.
