Students of the Kazakh-German University visited CHPP-1 after B.Orazbayev: how energy is born
The students of the third year of the “Energy and Environmental Engineering” program of the Kazakh German University in Almaty were taken on an educative trip to the B. Orazbayev CHPP-1 on February 5, 2024. Within the framework of the course “Environmental Methodology Technology” eight students under the guidance of Professor Falk Weyer got acquainted with the work of one of the oldest combined heat and power plants in the city.
The tour began with a mandatory safety briefing, after which all students were given safety helmets. Alexander Kuptsov, Deputy Head of the Adjustment and Environmental Protection Shop, led the group through the boiler, turbine and chemical shops, telling them in detail about the history of CHPP-1, its technological processes and features. The visitors were able to observe the power and hot-water boiler units, turbines and a complex system of pipelines.
A.Kuptsov paid special attention to the environmental aspects of the plant’s operation: emission reduction methods, fuel quality control and modern approaches to minimizing environmental impact. He spoke in detail about the automated monitoring system (AMS) designed to track gas (flue) emission concentrations at the main stationary emission sources.
– The students found it interesting to know that the AMS provides real-time data transfer to the information system of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, – said Alexander Kuptsov.
At the end of the trip the students visited the control room of turbines and boiler units of the plant. The students witnessed how the station’s employees monitor the operation of the equipment around the clock with the help of sensors, monitors and communication systems.
– The scale of the equipment is amazing: huge turbines, boilers, kilometers of pipelines, – shared her impressions Anna Velyaeva, a third – year student. – They explained us how steam and hot water are transformed into heat and electricity for the city. I especially memorized the control room – a real brain centre of the station. Now I understand better how important green technologies are in the energy sector.
Firuza Kurmanova added that the tour showed how complex and responsible the energy production process is. “I was impressed that they think about reducing the emissions even on such a scale here. It inspires us, future engineers, to look for even more efficient solutions, Firuza said.
Practical activities like this trip play a key role in the training of specialists. They not only reinforce theoretical knowledge, but also allow us to see the real challenges and achievements of the industry. The staff of CHPP-1 and the Kazakh-German University will continue co-operation, opening new opportunities for students to study modern energy and environmental technologies.
