Press tour of the CHPP-2 construction site: a glimpse into the future of Almaty

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) held a press tour of the Almaty CHPP-2 construction site. Representatives of the city and national media had the opportunity to see with their own eyes the implementation of Almaty’s largest environmental project – the conversion of the station from coal to natural gas.

Journalists have seen the key facilities of the future station: sites for turbines and generators, a gas preparation plant and erected building structures. Experts have noted that the project is being implemented in accordance with the approved schedule.

The tour organizers emphasized that after the launch of the new CHPP, emissions into the atmosphere will be reduced by 13 times, which will significantly improve air quality in the metropolis. The station will be built taking into account the seismicity of the region and international environmental safety standards.

During the meeting, journalists asked questions about the timing, funding and tariff policy. ADB representatives said that the bank is one of the key investors in the project and considers the modernization of Almaty CHPP-2 as an example of responsible and ‘green’ financing aimed at benefiting the city’s residents.

The press tour was an important event in Almaty’s information agenda. It allowed the project’s openness to be demonstrated and its significance for the environment, energy reliability and the health of the metropolis’ residents to be underlined.
