One day in the life of a safety inspector

“Every person spends about a third of his life at work, so a healthy working environment and occupational safety are of great importance to me,” says the inspector.
Askhat’s working day begins at 8.00 with a tour of the main control panel. The station shift manager reports on the condition of the equipment and personnel passing the shift. Then he goes to the medical center to monitor workers who have undergone a pre-shift medical examination, their health status and suitability for work.
Next is a typical day for a safety inspector. After the walk-through, he conducts induction training for newly hired personnel and contractor employees.
– The quality of the training determines how seriously employees will take the safe performance of their job duties. If the briefing is carried out “formally, for show,” then the attitude towards work will be appropriate, notes Askhat. – The task of the senior inspector is to increase the self-discipline of workers in matters of compliance with safety requirements.
After the briefing, Askhat goes to a weekly planning meeting with the station director and shop managers, where current issues on the condition of equipment, the supply of spare parts, milk are covered, information is provided about employee feedback on new workwear, issues are resolved on the necessary measures to stop or correct unsafe work or unsafe working conditions.
– After the planning meeting, an urgent task arrives to complete a report on failures for the week or on budget adjustments. And I start collecting data. I sent the report by email, and now you can start analyzing the letters that arrived in the mail. Then it is necessary to conduct a walkthrough of workplaces according to the work order system, inspecting equipment and workplaces. Based on the results of the inspection, I draw up an instruction that shows the identified violations and proposals for eliminating them.
Carrying out regular inspections and walk-throughs of workplaces, Askhat has one main goal – preventing accidents at work and monitoring the technical condition of equipment. Control at the workplace is an important component of the occupational safety and health management system in an organization.
The workload of the senior inspector depends on many factors: the total number of employees, the number of departments, the attitude of employees to labor protection, the technical condition of equipment, and inspections by the shareholder and government agencies.
As a rule, the position of senior inspector is not visible. He is not a “favorite”: employees avoid him on a subconscious level, and he is, perhaps, the only one who protects their vital interests. Distracts people from work! – the shop managers think. It does not generate income, only expenses! – economists say. At the same time, Askhat subtly and clearly reminds that the problems of preventing technological violations, accidents and occupational diseases at all levels are among the priorities and responsibilities of everyone. After all, the main thing is to prevent the development of a disorder that can lead to injury to the employee, pain and suffering to the victim’s family.
Askhat expresses his deep gratitude to his mentors, professionals in their field, who shared their experience and knowledge, in becoming from a simple working mechanic to a senior inspector for technical operation of the occupational safety and health service – A.A. Sidorov, Kh.H. Kuzyrgaliev, V. V. Bezruk, A. S. Tayanov.
When you love your job, you constantly develop professionally. Therefore, when he has a free minute, Askhat monitors changes in legislation and is interested in new techniques that masters of their craft use in their work. It is important for Askhat to see the results of his work, and he sees them. After all, work should be safe everywhere.
