A new era for Almaty CHPP-3: reconstruction and modernization

A consortium of companies consisting of KBI Energy Group LLP, Energo Spets Stroy LLP, StandardEnergo KZ LLP, STROYINDUSTRIYA LLP, based on the results of an open tender for complex turnkey construction works in the amount of 257 billion tenge, announces on the start of work as part of the reconstruction of Almaty CHPP-3.

What does reconstruction include?

Reconstruction of Almaty CHPP-3 provides for the construction of a completely new power plant with significantly greater power and maneuverability. The new power plant will combine the generation of electrical and thermal energy. One of the key aspects of the project is the replacement of outdated pulverized coal equipment, which has exhausted its resource, with modern environmentally friendly combined cycle power units running on natural gas.

Competition at the tender

In addition to the consortium of Kazakh companies, a consortium of China Machinery Engineering Corporation (China Machinery Engineering Corporation) together with DP Engineering Group LLP and Bazis Construction LLP also participated in the open tender held among pre-qualified suppliers.

Future plans

Commissioning of the new CHPP-3 is scheduled for 2026. This date represents an important step in ensuring the energy sustainability of the region and in support of the strategic development plans of the Almaty region.

Project support

This project is being implemented in accordance with instructions received from the Head of State on the further development of the city of Almaty dated March 17, 2021 and in accordance with the message to the people of Kazakhstan dated September 1, 2021. In addition, according to the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated October 12, 2021 No. 730, the project is included in the national project “Sustainable Economic Growth Aimed at Improving the Welfare of Kazakhstanis.”

This Redevelopment represents a decisive step towards economic growth and improved efficiency of the region’s energy system, which will ultimately contribute to the overall well-being of the country and its citizens.
