Kapchagayskaya HPP named after Chokina
The design of Kapshagai HPP was carried out by the Kazakh branch of the S. Ya. Zhuk All-Union Design and Survey Institute “Gidroproekt” in 1959, with the completion of the project in 1961-1964.
In 1965, by order of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR No. 266-R dated 25.02.65, the directorate of the Kapshagai hydroelectric power station under construction was established and its construction began.
On October 1, 1970, by order of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, the Kapshagay Hydroelectric Power Station became part of Almatyenergo.
In 1980, the construction of the Kapshagai HPP was completed and the state commission signed an acceptance certificate for the completed construction of the Kapshagai HPP.
The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan adopted Resolution No. 423 of 12.05.92 on limiting the maximum reservoir level to 479 m.
In 1996, Kapshagayskaya HPP became a part of Almaty Power Consolidated JSC (a subsidiary of the Belgian company Traktebel. After the reform of Kapshagayskaya HPP Agribusiness JSC, it started functioning on February 15, 2007. It is a part of JSC “Almaty Electric Power Stations”.
